so to be clear first off this is a genuine post!!! i don't really spend a lot of time on this sub for reasons that will become clear but i have noticed that there's a lot of accusing people of trolling. i'm not i swear 😭
okay: i do not plan to go to law school. my goal is to get into PhD programs, and i'm only applying to PhD programs this cycle. but given the current state of PhD admissions, i wanted to have an LSAT on file so that i always have law school as a backup plan, because it's my second passion after philosophy research. so i took the august administration, and i also registered to take the october one.
i just got my score back today (didn't have an argumentative writing on file because my house had an open floor plan and then i moved LOL). i got a 171. i know this is a good score, but if i'm hoping to get into law schools, i would REALLY like to have a 176+ because ... i've been prepping for PhD programs and so i don't really have any other outstanding credentials for law programs specifically. i'd like to ideally have a high enough LSAT that it can somewhat make up for the rest of my application.
i know that people say moving up within the 170s is EXTREMELY difficult, and i only have like a month and a half to prepare. BUT!
i cannot make clear enough that i did not study for the august admin. i had a pretty severe mental health crisis over the summer. pair that with the fact that i ended up experiencing several family emergencies, and the LSAT was the first thing to fall by the wayside. i studied for maybe 3-4 hours total. never took a full practice test, just did some problems out of a prep book. didn't even know the layout of the test, time limits, ANYTHING about its structure until the literal morning of my exam. please let it be known that this is not how i typically approach things that are important to me—my life was in shambles this summer and i am ... not proud of myself to put it lightly. left feeling like shit, sobbed for 3 hours.
but the fact that i didn't study or prep for this one and went in essentially blind is making me think that maybe there's more of a chance for me to boost my score within the next month? i'm hoping that it'll be less difficult to push my score up within the 170s than is typical because (theoretically) i missed a lot of questions on this admin due to being unprepared for time limits, not knowing question types, etc. with a month of actual studying and PTs, i could at least eliminate those questions, right?
my parents say i'm wasting my time and money—they think i should cancel and get a partial refund for the october administration. they're pretty convinced i won't be able to get it where i want it in only a month or so, given that "so much depends on luck." some of my friends have shared the sentiment. but am i wrong to think that the circumstances of my first admin will make it more plausible that i could pick up some extra points in the oct admin? i also don't want to cancel and reschedule for a later admin, at least not until i finish my PhD cycle and find out whether i got into a program.
any advice appreciated. because of the whole "not actually planning to go to law school" thing, i don't really have any mentors or advisors to ask about this kind of thing. it's quite possible that i'm dumb for even doing the LSAT in the first place but. idk guys 😭 i'm really stressed about this now and idk what i'm doing 😭
