I was in the ER with an infection in my blood and in quite a bad way, only thing I really remember is a nurse yelling at a lady saying how gratefully she should be that her concern is only a sprained ankle and points at me and goes "you don't want the attention that guy is getting, and be grateful that you don't need that many doctors and nurses." She was complaining that it was unfair that I was getting prioritised over her daughter with a sprained ankle and it was taking too long.

I was at the hospital on a backboard in a room shared with another patient. She was absolutely screaming in agonizing pain. After a few minutes, I asked through the curtain what was wrong with her - she had a broken toe. I then replied with "I have a broken neck, shut the fuck up."

You can’t be refused at a ER for inability to pay, so people without insurance or enough to pay the copay at an urgent care. Not always easy or possible for a layman to differentiate between a sprain or something more serious, and some folks would rather not risk it.

But on a positive note, good on that nurse for keeping it real with the mom who just… either didn’t understand the difference between your state and her daughter’s sprained ankle, or did understand and felt entitled to what she was asking for anyway.
Glad you survived!

I relate to losing memory, I don’t much of anything, really, from the three weeks I was in the hospital for septic shock (or the morning of the day I went to the ER, for that matter). It was a really strange experience.
Unfortunately, I apparently had to wait almost 3 and a half hours in the waiting room the day I went

I’m a school nurse and was just talking with a nurse colleague this morning about being brand new nurse 15yrs ago and quickly realizing how many people are below average intelligence. It’s not even their fault much of the time.

Mostly no filter when it comes to disease, but a lot of accidents do have a ‘doing dumb shit or not’ filter. Even a car crash can filter the seat belt wearers from the non wearers at the ER, and that’s a partial intelligence filter for sure.

I was about to say exactly this. If anything we see the opposite in that dumber people are more likely to end up in the ER statistically even if only slightly.

I work in a multinational office and everyone has a degree. These are supposedly the clever people and half of them are still dumb as rocks. I can only imagine your hell.

It's not dumb people that scare me. I worked in an urgent care center and I was shocked at how the general public, doctors I worked with, nurses I worked with etc etc all seem to have 0 logic or basic reasoning skills.

They were intelligent and STILL couldn't think 2 steps ahead or logic through basic issues or constraints. They are also completely unable to hold the idea that two things can be true at the same time in their heads. It's such basic cause and effect without considering knock on effects that scared me.
