It wasn't a downside during slave times. Some laws are unjust.

jury nullification was also the reason lynchings could be so brazen and common after slavery. It’s a double edged sword.

It was in fact far more commonly used to support lynchings than anything that helped black people. Juries were made from the general population, and the general population was ridiculously racist on average, so any subversion of the law they were going to do was going to be in the racist direction.
