I've found this similar outlook with a lot of highly religious people.

They get this idea in their head the truth isn't facts and evidence, it's something you "feel."

I would argue feeling is everybody's fucking identity. That keeps being proven by facts and evidence, to my knowledge.

The problem seems to take place when people get stuck on a single emotion, especially if it is an intense one, as rage and fear tend to be, and then they cannot follow any thought drifting beyond that substrate, even slightly.

Thought that goes somewhere, on the other hand, seems to flourish on emotions that grow and decay, that are prone to take us where other emotions will emerge. And although everything we do consistently seems to imply some kind of method, holding some discipline, especially when it's imposed by ourselves, and the boredom it entails seem favorable to the drift of emotions and the emergence of subtle nuances that would get flattened in the heat of the raw survival bunch. And so the children learn how to play; imagination finds a safe place and some room to explore what may become of those unused, unnamed emotions. And we can and will always justify it later.

Because all religion and spirituality are entirely predicated upon emotional intensity. Otherwise all the mythology would be any other story, the morality tales would be legalism, and the cognitive beliefs would be like any other information consumed

Religion maybe. Spirituality is different. Spirituality doesn't require background stories or mythology. It's a seperate state of being and practice of faith all together.

Not just that, it represents a fundamentally egocentric and backwards worldview where reality is expected to conform to what you already believe of it rather than basing your beliefs on reality and adjusting to new or changed evidence. They decide what’s true before investigating it - a philosophy based on preconceived notions and a huge amount of “because I said so”.

The confusion of personal feelings with objective fact is one of those things that just drive me mad, because there's no way of reasoning with it.

It ranges from the fairly harmless, like someone insisting my music preference is crap because they personally dont like it.

To the extremely harmful, like insisting homosexuality is disgusting and wrong because the thought of having gay sex disgusts them personally.

To the infuriating, like getting mad at someone they wronged because now they feel bad and therefore the person associated with that feeling must be wrong.
