*International Applicants Might Find it Helpful As Well (can't edit the title :p)

I attended the meeting, and here is the stuff that I found interesting enough and/or wasn't mentioned on the application webpage. Some stuff present here might also be helpful for JET applicants around the world.

From the local Embassy staff:

·       In the past, only few ALTs were selected (often selected back then to celebrate anniversaries between India and Japan)

·       Due to growing ties between India and Japan, it was made that from 2025 onwards, continuous applicants would be selected.

1.      11 ALTs were selected in 2025

2.      22 ALTs were selected in 2026

3.      As for 2027, no number is fixed as of now, as the applicants are drawn from all over the world. Although, the embassy aims to send more and wants to attract good applicants who can compete with international candidates.

·       Teaching is as important as exchange aspect. You are also a representative of India and are expected to share your own culture, in and outside schools.

·       You need to have excellent English skills, and what is the standard English pronunciation?

American/British style of accent is considered the standard by Japanese people, although your accent should not be strong in any case, in order to be understandable.

From the Japanese Embassy staff involved in the JET process, he stated that in his opinion:

·       SoP is the most important document.

·       Being flexible, open-minded and patient is the most important thing for a JET candidate to have.

·       He was responsible for recruitment of JETs in Ireland two decades ago, and he had to reconsider some candidates due to their strong accent and fast manner of speaking. With this anecdote, he wanted to convey that even Western candidates have to maintain an understandable accent, and are not given a free pass for being a Westerner.

·       Should have a genuine interest in Japan, beyond anime and manga.

·       The intercultural exchange aspect of JET is as important as the teaching aspect of JET.

·       Motto of the JET Programme is ESID, so be prepared for anything and everything.

That’s pretty much the gist of what was shared that might be insightful. There was a Q&A round, but I don’t remember any particularly important stuff being covered. You can call the helpline available on JET ALT page or email them if you have any questions, they’ll be ready to answer.

Hi guys, hope you all are well. I’m a 21 yr old community college student, and one of my goals to get a bachelors degree is for the potential option of getting into JET.

After this year I plan to transfer to WGU online college, and was wondering if getting my bachelors fully online will matter or will decrease my odds of getting in?

side question: will getting a degree in english/literature increase my chances of getting into JET, vs something like business/IT ?

So I’ve had a lot of experience working abroad ( A few summers in the USA at summer camp & then working on a cruise ship as a photographer last year) which im hoping will help me with my chances. I taught Japanese Ju Jitsu for a few years here in the UK and im currently working in an outdoor education camp. So, I’ve worked with children a lot but never in a classroom setting so is that okay ?

Jumping the gun a bit, however in terms of accommodation, will i be sharing with someone or will i be able to be in my own place?

Finally, I’ve briefly started on my SOP is there anything you would recommend…

Hi, I’m working on getting some of my things prepared for the application this Fall and needed help or guidance on what I should do for my second letter.

For my first letter, I have one of my Professors who taught my education class so that one is all sorted out no problem.

I’m curious if I should get another professor or school figure to do my second letter of recommendation, or if I should get one of my managers from previous jobs. I’ve only worked part-time jobs but I’ve held high positions in all of them and the managers/owners can speak highly of me.

I'm an aspiring ALT applying for the 2027 JET intake — this will be my first time applying. While researching on various forums, I came across other ways for teaching English in Japan, such as private dispatch companies like Interac, Borderlink, and ALTIA Central, etc.. which appear to have a comparatively simpler application process than JET.

So that time I had a question appeared in my mind I'd appreciate some insight on: why does JET continue to attract such intense competition year after year, when these private companies — offering what seems like a similar role — see comparatively less demand? If it isn't primarily about remuneration (which I'd imagine could be offset through other means), what specifically makes JET the preferred route for so many applicants over private dispatch alternatives?

Some schools never really talk about your pred, but do any of you have something who was adored or not liked by their schools? How did that affect your time on the program?

I think I've finally reached the point where I'm ready to have some other people look over my SoP. I've gone over it more than a few times myself and made some pretty major changes but I've reached the point where I'm not sure if its actually getting any better. I've been lurking on this page for the past few months, ever since I decided to apply for the program this fall. I was wondering if I could get some help form current or past JET ALT's on writing my SOP.

I'm 23 years old and I'm currently working as a volunteer teacher in India (working with 11-15 year olds, teaching Social Studies, Computers, and English). I'm TEFL certified, have a BCA degree, and I've been slowly chipping away at Japanese on my own. I will be taking the NAt test for October, 2026.

I've always been drawn to Japanese culture and spirituality, and the more I dig into it the more I keep noticing these weird little parallels between Indian and Japanese traditions. That's basically the heart of my SOP that's why "why JET" is pretty simple for mee to answer. Speaking of which — I've got a full draft done but I have zero idea if it's actually good or if I'm just fooling myself lol. Would really love if some of you could weigh in on:

• My SOP stuff — what actually made yours stand out? Any cringe mistakes you see people make (especially applicants from India, if that's a thing)?
• Interview Questions— what were you actually asked?? Did they grill you more on "why Japan" or more on teaching chops?
• Reference letters — mine are gonna be handled online since my referees aren't local — anyone dealt with this before? Any gotchas?

I would love to have any insights on these. All of them will be vey helpful for me. And thank you to everyone whose old posts I've already creeped on for info, this sub is honestly such a lifesaver 😅.

P.S - I would really appreciate if I could have insights from Indian ALTs as being a fellow indian myself.🙏

Some background I’m 25 with an accounting degree and a few years experience working in the corporate world. However I’m currently unemployed and feel like I’m going through a quarter life crisis and am really questioning how long I can keep working the corporate career ladder. JET is something that has always peaked my interest as I’ve wanted to experience living and working in Japan for years now. It is a little daunting given the fact that I have no experience teaching and am not the most outgoing individual but I think I want to give it a shot and apply. Has anyone left their corporate life to do this? I feel like a lot of people will probably think I’m dumb for taking a pay cut to teach English but if it allows me to gain new experiences I don’t think I’ll regret it.

I have been living in Japan for 7 years and hope to get naturalized soon.

Being an ALT or an English teacher may not seem all that difficult at face value, but not many people would consider teaching an easy profession. That, coupled with a vastly different culture that is notoriously resistant to English education efforts (not necessarily morally, but Japan is still ranked 94th to 96th in English proficiency), the day-to-day can be very difficult. Having been a teacher for about a decade, I constantly heard from other Japanese teachers and ALTs about their struggles with the Japanese workplace (in this case, eikaiwas, schools, jukus, etc.). I hear about arguments, disagreements that lead to ostracization, general sense of loneliness, etc. Most big eikaiwas and dispatch companies claim to have "comprehensive training... covering Japanese culture, teaching methods and beyond" (borderlink) and "orientation programs and ongoing support" (interac).

Seeing the teacher strikes from couple years back (and intermittently throughout), I have strong doubt about this "comprehensive support" they claim to give. A lot of teachers seem unhappy and most of them seek out direct-hires, where there seems to be even less support but at least a good salary and a large safety net.

I just wanna hear people's stories and thoughts. I do not intend to pick a side in a cultural war, but I am genuinely curious about everything that people are struggling with and all the ways in which they feel neglected.

For context, I am a 3rd-year Prefectural ALT. In my current BOE, JET ALTs can only stay for up to 3 years due to local policies.

For those who have been in a similar situation, were you able to transfer to another CO? If so, what is the process like?

Well, I've been prepping for the JET ALT application 2027 for a while now and figured who better to ask than people who've actually navigated the process from India specifically — the international threads are helpful but the India-specific stuff (embassy quirks, timelines, competition, cultural fit questions) is a whole different thing.

I'm eagerly awaiting applications to open for JET 2027 but I'm already trying to get all my documents in order early.

One thing that I'm just a bit confused about (that I don't want to bother the JET rep Ryan with just yet) is in the document that lists what we need to submit, it explicitly states that "no documents will be returned" after submission. Cool, BUT in the requirements for application it asks for 1x original set of passport, Certificate(s), Reference(s), SOP, etc. and 2x black and white copies, yes? So now, what does "original set" entail? Just a certified colour copy of the document (e.g. Passport)?

For context, I'm South African, so I'm assuming I just need to make a colour copy of my original documents (certificates, passport, etc.) and have it certified at the police station?

Hopefully this isn't a silly question but any feedback would be appreciated :)

Hi! I am writing my statement of purpose at the moment and have sort of an odd and specific question about it.

Does anyone know if it's particularly important to write numbers as words, or would it be ok to write them as numerical values (example: eighteen versus 18)? Does it matter at all? My journalist and academic writing brain is making me more confused lol. TIA!
