Yes but this isn't that right now. No one is forcing you to buy game pass. What did people do before game pass existed? Buy the games they want? Just keep doing that? People are still gonna buy GP and let them. But if you want to own your games and actually be happy, just buy the games you want to play and pretend GP never existed in the first place.

Until the government steps in and says something like, "you can no longer buy and own games", you can still own your stuff and be happy.

Edit: downvoted are crazy. So I take it, you are being forced to buy GP? You should waste your money on it? Don't buy the games you want? I truly don't understand.

It would happen from everything getting more expensive.

Want to buy a desktop? Ram, gpu, ssd have exploded in price. But you can RENT one from some companies now.

Buy a house? lol

Buy a car? Trade war and tariffs

Buying healthy food is even hard.

Only thing people can buy in excess is digital content. Which are just licences that can be revoked.

I think you're mistaken. Gov is needed to ensure you do own it.

As it is CURRENTLY, you will never own a game from Sony PS6 on. It's a digital only platform. You will only be able to buy games from sony store and it is a license that you are renting for an extended period of time not buying.

You will not own anything if you allow corporations to do whatever the hell they fucking want

Well the government can go both ways. WE need the government to ensure we own our media. Corporations need the government to ensure we don't own our media. That's the one I'm afraid of.

And I was talking about GP, not Sony. Sony will probably only have a few exclusive games that probably only be bought and played on their consoles. 90% of games will still eventually make their way to PC/other consoles.

And if you don't want to allow corporations to do whatever they want, then I still stand by my original point. No one is forcing you to buy GP. So vote with your wallet. Don't buy GP. Or rather, don't spend money on any company that doesn't want you to own your media.

Why is that a controversial thing to say?

Unfortunately the 1% of people who think critically are subject to the economy enabled by the 99% of mouth breathers who enable shitty practices with their wallet until said shitty practice becomes the standard.

Look at PlayStation. Yeah, you can decide not to buy one as a protest to disc-less, but enough people are going to buy it that disc-less becomes the standard, regardless of your protest boycott. Now you’re just out a hobby.

Look at Pokemon TCG. People started buying packs from scalpers over MSRP, now you can’t find a pack on the shelf at MSRP. Now you can either buy at overinflated prices, or not buy at all. But you’re out a hobby.

GP is pissing people off because we know how to see the writing on the wall, not because it’s the only option at the moment

I understand there will always be people willing to buy the stuff. But at the same time, there is also a massive community of both consumers and developers who want to own their own media and will continue to make games available for everyone.

Sure maybe the AAA games will be locked behind the major companies. If those are the games you want to play then I feel for you. But there are thousands of non AAA games you can buy that have way fewer strings attached.

Honestly I am not even protesting going discless. I use Steam. I don't own any discs myself anymore. All I am simply saying is if GP looks like shit now, then don't buy it. Will there still be people buying GP? Yes. But if you yourself, an individual, are not ok with GP, then you yourself, an individual does not have to buy it.

There are thousnads of options still. We are not yet in the dystopian world that this subreddit makes it out to be. Maybe we are headed there, but RIGHT NOW we are not. So yes, I still say to buy the games you want to play and don't stress about GP increases their prices because who cares. Don't buy GP.
