Can I use Timeshift instead of RSYNC on Fedora Kinoite, create system snapshots, and restore them safely? My system uses Btrfs, KDE on Wayland.

It turns a spare Android tablet or phone into a genuine second monitor for Linux over Wi-Fi or USB, a real virtual display, not screen mirroring.

On GNOME (Wayland) it uses the portal for capture, with a saved restore token so you only see the permission dialog once. The virtual display itself goes through evdi, orbiscreen doctor --fix installs the kernel module for you if it's missing.

Once installed it just runs, orbiscreen start from the terminal or search for it in your app launcher.

I’ve spent some time digging into the limitations of immutable Linux and managed to bypass a 7-year-old limitation in rpm-ostree. In doing so, I've built a complete, self-contained framework that sits on top of rpm-ostree to automate complex software installs.

Unlike traditional methods that rely on patching the system, my approach focuses on controlling the workflow. Instead of patching the base system, I've implemented a design philosophy based on modularity and transparency.

My Engineering Principles:

• Minimal RPMs: RPMs contain only provisioning scripts—no heavy vendor patching.
• Systemd as the Workhorse: Standard RPM %post scripts run during the build/layering phase, meaning they cannot interact with the actual deployed system. My framework replaces these with modular systemd services that run at boot, allowing configuration to happen on the live environment.
• First-Boot Provisioning: By utilizing first-boot triggers, I gain full access to /etc and /var, effectively working around the core rpm-ostree limitations.
• Dormant Uninstallers: Built-in triggers ensure that when an RPM is removed, all artifacts are cleared, leaving the system in its original state prior to installation.
• No Vendor Layering: I avoid patching the base system entirely, opting instead to layer clean, modular services.

The Workflow:

Base System →→ →→ Layered RPM (minimal) →→ →→ Provisioning Scripts →→ →→ Systemd Services →→ →→ First Boot →→ →→ Working Solution →→ →→ Clean Removal via Dormant Uninstaller.

Im using fedora kde plasma 44, on a hp laptop. One day when I was adjusting widgets the black rectangle just showed up. It disappears when I hit win+d. It shows up right after I open the desktop.I tried deleting a few widgets to see if was a bugged one but there wasn't anything. I also tried changing thr theme to see if that was causing it but its still there.Pls help

I'm waiting for the Intel AX210card, the adapter & new battery for my Macbook Air 11" 2015 8GB. The plan is to install Fedora 44 on its own (no dual-booting). I'm kinda new to Linux. used Zorin for about a month on other laptop. After reading here & there, i decided to turn my old MBA as a travel laptop. So i guess this power consumption aspect is important to me.

Main usage; office (will use Libreoffice), light browsing, web-based tasks.
Occasional; local video playback, retro PS2 emulator.

Any suggestion for battery saving are welcomed.

There's a lot of background / static noise when I use my internal mic from my laptop.

I have fedora dualbooted with Windows, and this doesn't happen with Windows.

I tried reducing the sensitivity, the noise stays, lower, but stays, but my voice also sounds quieter.

Like why is this the default, I installed this as a server and guess what ssh becomes unavailable because it's gone to sleep. So I fix that and it works fine until the next time I did an update and bang there it goes again. Has it always been like this and whose bright idea was it?

So I tried Zorin as my first Linux few months ago and then I got bored and switched back to Windows but then that ads and copilot and forced Windows update made me switched to Linux again so I choose Pop OS.

I used it for few days but was not satisfied then I heard about Fedora and tbh I think it is amazing and I been using it from few days and I love most part of it apart from that software store which just hang if I try to download any software which result me to use the terminal lol.

But I'm happy with Fedora overall it is better than Zorin or way better than Pop os.

Background: I used to daily drive Fedora in the mid 2010s, then I switched to Pop!_OS when it came out and have been using that ever since. However, because of all the problems people were reporting with Pop 24.04, I never upgraded from 22.04. Version 26.04 was supposed to be out months ago, and I'm tired of waiting. So I looked around at a bunch of distros and I'm looking to come back to Fedora.

The problem: After a successful fresh install of Fedora KDE Desktop Edition, I tried to do the first thing I always do on a new OS: install my preferred browser. I've tried a few different approaches (detailed below) but I can never get past the window pictured below when I try to open the browser. I cannot interact with the window in any way or close it (except by killing the process).

What I've tried:

• Installing from the RPM download on Vivaldi's official site
• Adding the Vivaldi repo manually and installing using dnf install
• Verifying that all my graphics drivers are up to date
• Searching r/Fedora. I found one possibly relevant result, but the solution there did not fix my issue.
• Searching r/vivaldibrowser. I found one possibly relevant result, but the suggestion was to try the flatpak instead, and I want to avoid that if possible.
• Installing from the GUI "Discover" app on Fedora KDE. Here I get a slightly different result - the gray is a bit darker, and there are no circles on the right side. But it's still just a blank gray window with the Vivaldi logo that can't be interacted with.
• Running from the terminal shows the following output:

Sorry to bother I'm currently in need of help. As the picture shows my login screen seems to have been bug or just all over the place. The icon and the password seems to flickering, unless I move my mouse in which case it stop flickering but will shows at both monitor, as shown in the second picture.

I could interact with it normally but it's just annoying to look at. And for note I did set them apart in the display configuration, as shown in the third picture.

Hello guys. I once posted here asking for help with the Wi-Fi on my laptop, and you guys really helped out. This time, I'm having a problem with my PC. I installed Fedora 44 KDE as a second OS on my SSD alongside Windows 11. However, I have no internet access in Fedora 44. The connection list shows "Unknown," and the terminal only lists one adapter: `lo`. I know this means the adapter failed to initialize at the kernel level. I tried connecting my phone via USB, but due to my carrier, the speed dropped to 0 bytes. Anyway, please help. Motherboard: MSI PRO B660M-E DDR4 Processor: i5-12400f Graphics card: RTX 5070

This update screen wont go away even I tick it and power off to install update. I have done it many times. I already checked all updates

I mean Bazzite is good, however more inclined to gaming, since I only play 5 games, Desperados 3, Marvel Rivals, The Division 2, Overwatch and Gotham Knights Fedora is much more better. Had to install KDE since I installed GNOME, wasn't used with how the Mac OS style is so the UI of KDE with Windows like I prefer it. Had some quirks with KDE after installing it but fixed it and now it is all goods.

I won't be removing Gnome for the long run now.

I've recently switched to Linux Fedora and I've been loving it. However, when working on somewhat bigger projects in Blender and yesterday working on footage to do VFX in Davinci Resolve, both crash a lot faster than I'm used to, due to memory filling up, which will then cause the kernel to kill the program. Especially in Resolve, I was working on a single 4K clip, no complicated effects, and it crashed on that. It feels like Windows just kinda limits how much memory is available for a program, while Linux Fedora lets it go wild until it takes too much. Ideally it'd dynamically limit the available memory and prevent these crashes. Is there any way to do that? I'd much rather have the software throw a message that says "out of memory" than grinding my whole system to a halt and crashing.

I’m currently running cachyos and was thinking to moving to fedora. I like that fedora seems to be a mix of up to date packages and stability. Only thing is I wanted to know how gaming was for steam and emulators like (retroarch/pcsx2/rpcs3). At this point in my life I just want something stable/“boring” rather than having to tinker with everything.

I do not know why, but recently I have been experiencing instability issues on my system. For instance, when I wanted to change my Plasma Login Manager background, I went to System Settings, selected a background, then clicked "Apply", then I got an error in red saying could not connect to helper and it would not prompt me for a password.

Then a couple days ago, I open system settings, and Audacity (the only apps I saw manifesting this behaviuor), but no window would pop up. Their icon would briefly show up on my Icon-Only task manager, then briefly disappear. System Monitor does show them running in memory. Running Audacity from the terminal produces no verbose output, so don't know what the issue was. It was fixed by restarting. Same with settings.

Today, I powered on my laptop, installed the latest batch of updates, then upon rebooting I have no sound. I went to my System Settings, and in the "Sounds" tab, all I see now is "Connection to the Sound service lost".

I did not do anything specxial to my system. Clean Fedora install with LUKS encryption and NVIDIA drivers signed using MOK Utility with Secure Boot enabled. nvidia-smi does show the driver and the current amount of memory being used.

I swapped the free version of ffmpeg for the non-free one from RPM fusion and installed their additional multimedia codecs, no problems from that as far as I could tell. MKV files played in the Dragon player just fine, now I got no sound at all.

I have two changes I made to my system that to my knowledge should not impact sound, but will mention them in case: 1. I have a script that Lutris runs before one of my games (Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora) is executed. This script is simple, and all it does is disable the kernel split lock mitigation in my current session because I was experiencing audio crackling and after some time my entire USB interface would be dropped by the kernel, taking out my keyboard, mouse, and headset along with it. This mitigation fixed that. Here is all the script does: ``` $ cat ~/.local/scripts/avatar-launch.sh

This stops the kernel from throttling processes causing split locks.

On Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, this fixes audio crackling. Tested against

PipeWire. Needed before the game runs. Setting only applies for current session.

``` And in Lutris I added this environment variable "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=100", which should give 100ms of extra buffer for sound to be passed to my hardware.

1. To make the script run without Lutris asking me for my password (which it would not even do, and the game would just launch anyway without the change being applied), I created this file "split-lock" in the sudoers directory with the following contents: $ sudo cat /etc/sudoers.d/split-lock # This allows for Lutris to not require a password for disabling kernel split lock mitigations. # Needed to improve audio latency issues and stability in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. # Mainline script located at ~/.local/scripts/avatar-launch.sh technerd ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/sysctl -w kernel.split_lock_mitigate=0

Which should allow Lutris to execute this single command without prompting me with my password. I have tested that it works. The only other thing I can think of is that I simply have too much plugged in into my system: Display (BOE0A41): 1920x1080 in 16", 165 Hz [Built-in] Display (RTK QHD): 2560x1440 @ 1.5x in 27", 60 Hz [External] Display (KA242Y): 1920x1080 in 24", 100 Hz [External] * Plus a USB dongle for my mouse and keyboard, another USB cooling pad, and my headsets plugged in separately to my other, and last available, USB port.

Do you guys believe my issue stems from my configuration specifically or something I might have done?
