I'm experimenting with the air dry clay. The leaves image was exposed just a half hour or so after applying the mixture. The edges aren't sharp because the surface isn't flat and the sun may have moved. The image from a photo, the cyanotype solution was left to dry longer, so I think it was absorbed more. Air dry looks promising and it's not expensive.

Hello! I am very much a beginner at cyanotype. I have found that in a big batch I make, there is often a wide variation in quality. Some have nice dark blue and are crisp, and others are duller and lighter.

I'm thinking because I print outside in the sun, I am getting these inconsistencies. I love the idea of sun printing, but would a UV lamp help with this issue?

I also notice discoloration in the center area- I'm wondering if this means I am applying the cyanotype solution too thickly in the middle?

Any tips or recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!

lately I’ve been using solar fast on fabrics instead of traditional cyanotype solution, just for longevity.. but, the past couple prints I’ve had are turning out super splotchy. Im wondering if it is because of the foam brush I’m using to apply the solution to fabric? Any other ideas of what I may be doing wrong? these Keep turning out so poorly, where as the first one of this exact print turned out well for me. Thanks for any suggestions:)

Tl;dr is there an adjusted way to make prints when it is cloudy out?

Hi! I have been wanting to get into cyanotypes for a long time; I started with tumeric prints and loved it, so I finally got the chemicals, mixed them up, waited 24 hours, applied them to the paper, waited 24 hours, and now... it's been cloudy for a week. ☁️

I'm brand new to this art, so I am hesitant to buy a uv lamp solely for printing. ​Is there an adjusted way to make prints when it is cloudy? I tried to make a print by leaving it out for a couple of hours, but it just didn't work.

We just started getting into this and we always split the paper in half and he does one and I do one. This was "tree" edition. He did a cactus in Joshua tree and I did a tree on a beach in eastern NC. Really loving the process and how much fun it is overall.

Also I'm curious, I'm able to use the microwave to dry my cyanotype before exposure and then I also dry them after they've been exposed and washed as well. Is there anything bad with drying it this way? I can basically make a cyanotype from start to finish in about 10 minutes.

Also I'm curious as to what y'all think is causing the white spots on the edges of the paper, I can't figure it out but I think it might have to do with the prewetting of the paper before the emulsion goes on. Thanks

Finally got some film back from my trip to Philly/New York and I wanted to try cyanotype with them so badly! These are color negatives that I exposed for 45 minutes in bright, direct light

Does anyone else harvest the condensate from a dehumidifier or air conditioner for a source of distilled water? It is summer in New England and I seem to have an infinite supply. I filter it through coffee filters. I need to find a good way to store some for the winter.

Hello! I wanted to do some cyanotypes while camping and I don’t know/think we’ll have access to a sink. What is the best way to dispose of the water so that it doesn’t hurt the earth/organisms? We would be doing it on paper. I’m new to this so please excuse my ignorance.

I came here and was greeted by a bunch of firsts, so what the hell I'll share mine too.

The main idea was to make decent prints on a budget and in rather Spartan conditions, got no room for a darkroom at the moment. And the on first try my setup was also rather rudimentary. I'm pretty sure they got overexposed, and the glass pane was too small and left some very visible lines around the edge. Also admittedly my photos were quite shit too... But I had fun.

The prints do seem to have been much sharper/clearer/brighter when fresh, makes me wonder how much them being wet had to do with it or if the rinse was insufficient.

I am going to try larger negatives, the printer foil is on its way, but I'd prefer to do them the old fashioned way as I move on. Unless I forget, can't seem to hold down on to a hobby, can I...

I tried making a test strip at 1 minute exposure intervals, and I barely get any difference in shade. At first I thought it might be my UV lamp's fault (395nm 50w 4inches above), but I tried it in the sun and I get the same results more or less.

Hey everybody!

I teach non-digital photography classes at a local junior college. After a non-trivial period of discussions, my boss and I decided it would be awesome to do a very large cyanotype as a group project this semester. We will probably do a hands-in sort of thing, so negatives are not the issue. I have a large darkroom to work in, so I don't think logistics are going to be much of an issue. What I'm lost on is what is a good choice for fabric, and how much chemistry we will need. We are currently using the photographer's formulary kit, but if there is a better choice I'm all ears, as long as it is liquid and not powder. The lab techs' really don't like powdered chemistry, and I don't want to piss them off.

Is a bed sheet a good choice for fabric? That is what someone else suggested, but I'm not sure it would work even if washed. Don't sheets have some weird chemicals in them? What about raw artist canvas?

I read a reply to another post that someone was wetting the fabric first and spraying it with the cyanotype chemistry using a spray bottle. I'm okay with that, but is that a solid technique?

Is there anything else I'm not thinking of?
