I spotted the USS Ronald Reagan from East Sooke Park
Not sure if it’s a regular occurrence, I’ve never seen an aircraft carrier go through. Apparently it’s stationed at Kitsap.

My second time in the city, excited for the next few hours. I am planning to walk around the harbor, go for a waterfront drink, and have dinner in Chinatown(?)
I am a dual Canadian citizen, planning to move over for the summer next year (around the nice weather months).
Jealous of your city!

Looks pretty slick I think? Will likely continue to puzzle tourists with its plastic feel and new vertical orientation
With rate of inflation this is is basically replacing a $5 bill 🤣

I do not own a vehicle and commute solely by bike. Im on the roads and our lovely goose/lochside/e&n trails
Why is NO BODY using their bell or saying "On your left!" when passing me? Like seriously.
Month of August, had only 3 people use their bell to pass. I must be an annoying ring a ling ding dong out here.
Maybe more of a rant then a question but im curious for you fellow bikers why you've given up on this common courtesy?

Drivers, when you give up your obvious right of way to allow me (whether driving or cycling) to cut in front and make, for example, a left hand turn, I don't know with certainty what your intent is. I don't have the right of way, so taking it puts me in a vulnerable position both physically and legally.
And if you are frantically waving at me from inside your car, understand that I can't always see you. All I see is your car stopped, unpredictably.
Be predictable.

Pulls up in his car gets out looks around for witnesses doesn't see any then offloads his unwanted junk onto the side walk then drives away unaware that he was being filmed. No expectation of privacy in public especially when you offload your crap in someone neighbourhood. Government St at Battery St. Leave it in front of your own house buddy boy. Had a cast on left forearm , Subaru.

I'm struggling to come up with a question that doesn't feel boring or repetitive or "it's on my website". What are the problems we're really facing as a city that can get some action? (Victoria-specific, but welcome discussion from other munis, please tag where you're coming from!)

Man i have had it with my mattress , it is saggy , it is rank , i wake up clutching my back and gritting my teeth together . Sometimes i wake up sweaty , seriously. I need this back breaker out of my life. I dont have a truck , my only buddy with a truck got killed hiking in Spain and his keys are in a reveen , and I’m not big enough to drag this slab out onto the road. I dont want to just dump it on the side walk ( jackass behaviour) , my moron uncle is giving me the gear telling me to carve it up ham style ( no thanks) . I would be thrown in the slammer if i let some one else lay on it , it is that bad , honestly. So , my reddit community please tell me what to do . Is there a mattress grave yard some one can hall this thing off to. Thanks

Do any of our local dollar stores carry any OTC meds?
Examples are: allergy relief, ibuprofen, acetaminophen etc.
I'm thinking not...otherwise I probably don't need to ask.
Other countries do, so I thought I would ask.
Canada has it's own regulations.
Enlighten me.

More details on FB, but there's a fundraiser for Arnel, a longtime barber at Brothers on Fort St. Arnel apparently suffered a stroke and cannot work. You can get your hair cut at Brothers on Sunday, September 13, and all proceeds will be donated to Arnel as he recovers. Or, you can drop off a donation.
I've had my hair cut by Arnel lots of times in the past. He has had an interesting journey to get to Victoria, and helps support a family back in the Philippines (and not to mention himself) with his earnings as a barber. He does a good job, too.

Just moved to the island and obviously we get a lot of rain here. I loved biking to work at my previous home but it didn’t rain much. Curious what gear is good to have in order to bike to work here. Thanks

Hi all! I am new to Victoria and planning on mostly bike commuting - looking for tips on the best routes from Fairfield to UVic.
Google Maps takes you up Foul Bay Road, but I've heard Henderson is better; is this accurate? What is your favourite route out of Fairfield? Any tips on the best (least sweaty) route to campus?
Thanks!
Edit: thanks for the advice everyone! I'll do a few test rides over the weekend with the different routes and go from there :)

Our apartment has the equivalent of an entire floor empty for an extended period but has barely reduced the rate. The adjacent unit to us is offered only $100 less compared to a year ago and has sat empty for many months.
The funny thing is, we are trying to extend our lease and they won't offer us the new reduced rate. Basement Parking lot is as expensive and as empty as the units but they rather let them sit empty than reduce the price.
Can anyone explain this?

I recently moved to Victoria, and my laptop has broken. I am fairly sure it's the charging jack that needs to be either replaced or resoldered. However, I just cannot seem to find a repair shop that does soldering, other than Mother Computers, who refuse to work on Gigabyte laptops. I'm starting to feel extremely frustrated at how I keep getting turned away, especially as school starts soon and I will need it fixed.

Just saw he’s going to be doing a meet and greet at the Royals game tomorrow and would love to add a signed card to the collection. Happy to throw you a few dollars or arrange a trade if you have any cards you’re looking for.
Can meet anytime during the day before the game to pick up

Is it just me, or are Victoria area tradespeople really really difficult to deal with? To be fair, I've never owned a house anywhere else so I don't know that its different here when compared to other cities.
But, long story short, over the last 5 or so years, I've been straight up ghosted by more than several tradespeople (for who knows what reason) during different phases of the quoting process.
I've always been polite and super accommodating of their schedules.
And now I've been ghosted by a contractor who I was referred to by the company who is replacing my vinyl deck. The fellow didn't show up at my house to view the work. I called him an hour after the scheduled time and he hung up on me before the phone range twice.
Like...do these people even want the work? How do I get people to show up?
