Public Service Announcement [PSA] Diagnosing your System - Tools and Workflows

Hello fellow Gamers,

Many of you come here for one reason: "I can't game"

So this list (which will improve over time) should guide you towards first diagnosis steps, and usage of tools along the way, so you can game sooner. And keep the sub clean, because if you solve the problem yourself, we don't need to moderate as hard.

ATTENTION: This post is meant to help people out with advice. It is not mandatory to follow any recommendation that is given here. Also, there are RULES you do need to read before posting.

Also, this sub does not specialize in buying advice's. There are better subs for your new PC build.

Workflows

Area of Issue Possible Workflow Solutions
RAM not as fast as it could be Check your BIOS/UEFI settings for a XMP Setting. Many systems have it disabled by default. Enable XMP
GPU/CPU is getting too hot Airflow is suboptimal? Check out this Guide on how to improve it Improve airflow inside your case
Bad FPS after swapping GPU's Check to make sure your HDMI or DisplayPort Cable is plugged in correctly. Your monitor should connect to your GPU, not your onboard video card.
Bad everything after cloning a drive that had your OS on it Stop cloning and reinstall windows. seriously, stop cloning your OS drives people
Clicking noise check for lose wires, locate the sound Whatever clicks, if its not a cable hitting a fan, replace that part ASAP.
PC randomly restarts Remove recently added parts and see if the problem persists. If it does, replace all parts one by one in this order of probability -> RAM, PSU, MoBo, CPU, EndUser Replace faulty hardware
Bad smell Do not touch a thing, unplug the maschine from power and call an expert. We know gaming is fun, but its not worth your life. Current can kill, call an expert for your own safety when dealing with possible short-circuited hardware.
BlueScreen Find out what the BSOD Code means and act accordingly. We recommend using this list of BSOD Codes for investigation. Replace or repair faulty soft or hardware.
BlueScreen - Advanced Every BlueScreen will (if this function is enabled on your maschine) produce a "minidump". Which is similar to an error log. This Topic however is a bit complicated, so we recommend following this guide. Replace or repair faulty soft or hardware.

Software Audio cues completely broken and controller aiming issue

I had perfectly good audio through my iem earbuds for months but for the last 2 weeks in every game I can't tell what direction footsteps or gunshots are and my soundstage is completely flat everything sounds like it's happening right in front of me there's no depth. I have a brand new pair of headphones too and no soundstage on those either. I've tested and I do have stereo working on both and I've tried every single in game setting and nothing works. The soundstage I haven't been able to get back but telling where enemy's are I had fixed yesterday somehow but as soon as I toggled mic monitoring on in call of duty to see if my mics working and turned it off in the game menu it completely reverted and sounds are all jumbled up again. My sample rate is correct and I don't have audio enhancements on in windows and spatial audio is off so it doesn't appear to be that. I've tried different audio jacks and I've ran my equipment through an interface and no interface.Maybe there's no correlation but it's worth mentioning my aim assist in call of duty when I play on controller has been broken for 6 months the strength is really weak and my stick input is not smooth I can't even throw a grenade where I want it goes way left or right I have no control and I've tried 8 controllers plus my controller works fine on my friends setup and aim assist is fully working and stick input is smooth. I've had it fixed twice for a couple days just tinkering with bios settings and in game settings and windows settings but as soon as I change 1 thing on my pc like a graphic setting in game literally a single one I remember doing it and my aim assist was completely gone again and I couldn't get it back by reverting the setting. It seems like every time my audio or aim assist is fixed any single thing changing on my PC even just a update in a game breaks my setup again.I upgraded my CPU and motherboard trying to fix my issues.I paid for a PC shop to check it out and they have said my hardware is fine on a stress test.Ive done 2 fresh installs of windows with wiping the drive to nothing and tried games with nothing else installed and it's still messed up. Any help is appreciated I don't know what to do other than buy a whole new PC I'm getting desperate since I've been having problems for 6 months and can't fix it.

Troubleshooting Monster Hunter Wilds - Crashing

Since February 2026 Monster Hunter Wilds has been crashing on any hunt. I can barely play for 15 minutes before the same crash error occurs each time.

My PC Specs:

OS: Windows 11

CPU- AMD RYZEN 9 5900X WRAITH 12-CORE 3.96GHz 24 LOGICAL PROCERSSORS

MOTHERBOARD- ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS WIFI CARD

GPU- SAPPHIRE NITRO+ RX6800XT, 16GB VRAM

RAM- 32GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 3200 MHZ

HDD #1- (3.5") 2TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA 7200RPM SATA III (6GB/S) W/ 64MB BUFFER

SSD #1- SEAGATE 250GB
(my OS is installed on this SSD)

SSD #2- Crucial T700 PCIe Gen5 NVMe 2TB SSD with Heatsink
(all my games are installed on this SSD)

------------------

The Error Code:

Fatal D3D error (24, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, 0X887A0005) Device Removed Reason (0x887a0006)

------------------

Troubleshooting I've Already Tried:

  • Verify game file integrity
  • Clean uninstall / reinstall
  • Delete shader cache file
  • Revert AMD driver to supported version
  • Run with -dx11 to bypass direct x 12 instability
  • Run game Administrator
  • Run Steam as Administrator
  • Run in Compatibility Mode
  • Run with Compatibility Mode disabled
  • Set PC Power Settings to High Performance (I already had it that way)
  • Cleared Steam Cache
  • Updated BIOS
  • Disable Framegen
  • Run with High Res texture Pack
  • Run without High Res texture Pack
  • Run in low graphics settings
  • Undervolt GPU
  • Added game folder and files to my security software exclusion list
  • Emailing Capcom, who replied with a shitty copy-paste answer telling me to do everything I already tried even though I already told them I tried it in my initial email.

Any ideas for solutions? I genuinely miss this game.

Performance/FPS Micro stutters in games after my laptop has been on for 2+ hours.

So recently I've discovered that after about a year of using this laptop, it has started to stutter when running games. I am not that well-versed in the internals of a computer so I am unsure as to what could be causing this.

After running the Userdiag test I have a pretty good idea that it may be the temperature of my CPU getting extremely hot during play. Here is the link to that test: https://userdiag.com/id/sO40dqoXh6

If anyone can specify a different cause or offer a solution that would be great.

Display Screen flickering to black sometimes and gets dim randomly

Installed a RTX 4060 few months ago, also bought a new PSU for it. The issue is that till now everything was normal, but from the last week or two, GOW Ragnarok stutters like crazy when exiting in-game menu at times with black screen.

Also, the screen gets dim randomly only when using Browser (no stutters) or on homescreen.

And another thing to note is that while playing CyberPunk 2077 none of these issues happen at all.

Tried disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable from my Samsung Moniter and GPU. Didnt solve any issues at all.

Display Nightreign feels like 20 FPS in Borderless Windowed, but Steam counter says 60

Hey guys,

I’m having a weird issue with Elden Ring: Nightreign and could use some help.

When I play in Fullscreen or standard Windowed mode, the game runs perfectly smooth at 60 FPS. But the second I switch to Borderless Windowed, the game visually turns choppy like 20 FPS. The weird part is that the Steam FPS counter still shows a solid 60 FPS. The game itself obviously isn't lagging, but what I'm actually seeing on my monitor is completely cooked.

Important context: I just moved my PC to a new place. I took the graphics card completely out of the motherboard to transport it safely, and ever since I put it back in, I've had this issue. I've never had this issue before I moved. Everything else seems to be running fine except for borderless mode in this game.

PC Specs:
CPU: i5 14400F
GPU: RX 9070
RAM: 48GB DDR4

Display Second screen performance lacking

When I switch my screens to play on the big TV the performance significantly drops. It's jagged and rough. It's not really lagging, the frame rate is just off. It shows whatever I cap it to, if it's unlimited it shows ~120 just fine. The TV is capped at 50hz so I mostly cap it there but it still looks off. I've enabled gaming mode but that doesn't help.

Troubleshooting Pc intermittently working

So I’ve just got my computer back after not having it for a year and it’s been completely wiped due to having to reinstall all of windows. I’ve never had this issue before, but I picked it up off my friend who fixed it the other day and it’s running off of a hard drive currently booting windows however I do have SSD’s and the day I got it back off him. My Pc wouldn’t boot up when I tried it so I removed my RAM tried clearing my CMOS and nothing seemed to work and then randomly it worked when I press the button and it’s been working ever since that day up until last night where it wouldn’t want to turn On so I tried unplugging the cable holding the power button for 25 seconds and plugging the cable back in and try it again and it didn’t work and then about five minutes later I pressed the button randomly and it worked and now I’ve had that issue three times the last 24 hours please can someone help me

Software Getting TPM 2.0 error on Win10 ONLY on my main account (Alt account works fine)

Hi everyone,

Two days ago, I was suddenly kicked out of a Valorant game with a TPM 2.0 error. Strangely, when I log into my alt account on the exact same PC, the game works perfectly fine with zero issues. The TPM error only pops up when I try to play on my main account.

Here are my specs:

  • OS: Windows 10 22H2
  • MOBO: ASUS Maximus VIII Hero (BIOS version 3208 - latest)
  • CPU: Intel i7-6700K
  • GPU: GTX 1080 Ti
  • RAM: 32GB

To fix this, I read on some forums that switching Windows 10 to MBR partition style might work. I went ahead and did it without backing up my files (word of advice: don't do this lol), but it didn't help.

I opened a ticket with Riot Support, but they just kept telling me to enable TPM in my BIOS. I had already tried that multiple times before even contacting them; my motherboard simply doesn't have that option.

When I reinstalled Valorant on the MBR version, I managed to get it running for a few minutes. However, it kicked me again, and now my main account demands TPM, Secure Boot, and a GPT partition all at once. Meanwhile, my alt account still works perfectly fine. I can also play League of Legends on my main account without any issues—it’s just Valorant that gives me this headache.

Does anyone have any suggestions or fixes for this? What should I do?

Display MSI GF65 Thin 10UE feels weird/sluggish in Apex Legends? Possible input delay or display issue?

I have an MSI GF65 Thin 10UE with the i7 and RTX 3060, and I'm having a really hard time describing an issue I've been experiencing while playing Apex Legends.

The game isn't stuttering, and my FPS seems fine. I'm running the laptop's display at 144Hz and have Apex capped at 120 FPS just like every other PC I've played it on. But for some reason, the entire game just feels... weird and slightly sluggish? I genuinely don't know how else to describe it.

It almost feels like there's input delay, but I'm not even sure that's actually what it is. My aim feels off, my movement feels off, and everything just feels less responsive than it should.

I know my controller isn't the issue because I've used the exact same controller on another PC, and it feels significantly better and more responsive there.

Has anyone else with a GF65 Thin 10UE experienced something similar? I'm wondering if it's possibly:

\-The laptop's 144Hz display/pixel response time

\-Some Windows, NVIDIA, or MSI setting

\-V-Sync or another latency related setting

\-CPU/GPU performance or temperatures

I'm honestly not sure what I'm feeling or how to properly test it, but something definitely feels off when I'm playing Apex compared to other PCs. If anyone has experienced this or has suggestions for things I should check, I'd really appreciate the help.

I'm also just experiencing mild motion sickness from the screen.

Hardware Pc fked up, vga led light on motherboard and no display

So randomly my pc decided to not display on my monitor(Its on it just wont display), on my motherboard theres a vga led light so I looked up many youtube videos to try to fix it, it all seems to be the same fixes which I tried and they don't work. Reseating the gpu, ram, cpu, taking out the ssd, making sure every pcie port is plugged, no issues with the monitor since I tested it on a different device. Specs are 1660ti, ryzen 5 2600x six core and my motherboard is a b450m gaming plus msi. (Sorry if the fix is obvious but I've litteraly looked everywhere but none of the fixes work) Also, in the rules it said a userdiag test is required but my pc straight up won't boot so idk what to do there. Can anyone tell me what's going on? Thanks

Hardware Pc is making a strange clicking noise

When I turn my pc on it makes a constant but inconsistent interval clicking noise around the gpu but I cannot tell if it is that. I have had zero problems since I bought this pre build and had it for 9 months. Please someone help and give possible guidance or tests to run to narrow it down to what it is. No cables in the way of any fans or anything and tested the bottom fans manually and they seem perfectly fine. I have a 5090 and this clicking noise happens even when the fans on the gpu are not moving when i turn the pc on.
