Module I ranked all my mods in NUS. AMA

Having just graduated last week, I decided to reflect on my 4 years in NUS CS. I also did a 2nd major in Data Analytics, and specialised in AI/ML and Computer Graphics and Games focus areas. Also took Japanese up to level 3 hahah

Lmk if you want my reviews on these mods! (Or why I gave them the tier I did) Some of these were taken long ago though, so it might have changed since or might be inaccurate.

Anyway ATB to those still studying and happy grad for those who just graduated!

Misc small new indian food table at pgp :)

There’s a tiny food stall at PGP run by an uncle who makes genuinely really good north indian food (tastes homemade I think). I’ve been getting food from him and it’s honestly underrated, but unfortunately the stall doesn’t get much business because it’s so small/tucked away.

I was talking to him recently and he said that if sales don’t pick up, he may have to close the stall, which would honestly be such a shame. Thought of making this post because of how helpless I felt in the moment.

I'm only making this post because I like the food and the uncle, not making any personal gain from it.

Looking for Advice fell out with friend group

wont go into much detail but our friendship fell apart halfway through year 1, the rest of them were avoiding me and very blatantly leaving me out of things. i never said anything and just closed one eye until something happened. i tried to stay friends but it got so awkward i decided to cut them off completely and now we are in year 2. i feel much better by myself than forcing myself to stay with people who treat me like shit :,) but still feels very lonely as everyone in class already have solid friend groups even tho i am friends with my classmates. anyone who went through friendship problems in uni?

Question How hard is it to fail a module?

Currently a Y2 taking 30 mcs this sem with 12 mcs of fluff. I really don't care about the fluffs and just want to do the bare minimum to pass. How much effort do I have to put in to pass?

Doing this because I barely touched my SUs last year and have to clear them before they expire.

Looking for Advice How do I recover from having wasted the bigger part of my time battling self doubt, depression and self-sabotage?

Administratively wise, im Y3 now. But I did well enough during year 1, but i crashed really hard in year 2, and I was in a dark state which im only pulling slowly out of now. I feel like Im only working on my personal and professional development now compared to others who have had multiple internships, and I just feel so scared starting out only now.

I dont even know if internships post graduation are a thing because I've landed absolutely zero. It is demoralising but im working on projects and my portfolio.

Just scared of going down this dark path, yet my efforts feel futile. I dont know what other job i can do since ive dedicated all my schooling life to a stem major. The negative self sabotaging thoughts are kinda loud, but I just try to persevere one more day. It feels rly bleak.

Module GE2215 - Looking for group members!

Context:

I'm a creator in Geometry Dash, so if you play the game and have experience with the editor, we'll have chemistry and can bounce off design ideas with one another. I reckon we'll work well.

I'm down to make anything for the project, but I'm oriented to health topics.

Discussion Feeling stupid in class

I'm in y2 and taking a level 3 language mod this sem, and I had been taking the level 1 and 2 mods since y1 sem1. Probably cuz it was a very basic level but I found them a breeze and I did pretty well. But now in level 3 the class size is much smaller and suddenly it feels like everyone is so fluent. They can all speak well and articulate their thoughts fluently, always asking questions and being participative. And here I am trying my hardest to understand half of what prof is saying, like yes I do understand but my brain feels laggy and slow and I'm struggling to articulate sometimes. Don't get me wrong but I'm still super passionate about the language but of course now it feels like I have to put in 2x more effort to study. Doesn't help that every lesson is a vocab dump.

Discussion Anyone else experienced non-ghost related creepy coincidences that make you think there must be a glitch in the matrix? Not related to dead people or spirits, just things that make u go”how did they know?”

I am not looking for typical stories like “ I was in army and this door opened by itself” or “I heard cries coming from that empty deserted toilet in school” because these have already been covered countless times in other Reddit sg posts.

No, I’m looking for bizarre coincidences or patterns you personally encounter that have NOTHING TO DO WITH GHOST OR SEVENTH MONTH. Like, every single time you listen to a particular song/eat a particular food/ ask a particular question/ wear a particular piece of clothing then either your luck will get unnaturally good or unnaturally bad.

Ok this is hard to phrase clearly, let me share some “how could they have found out or known???” Incidents in sg, I’m curious to see if anyone else experienced something similar

🍀a senior from my school started asking me out saying that he really wants a girlfriend. When I told my classmate (in person) about this, she was shocked to tell me that the same senior confessed to her too using the same lines. That’s not the spooky part. The truly creepy part is, the very next day, this senior said “I see that you’ve been taking to (classmate name) about me.” Holy cow, unless he puts a voice recorder inside my bag, HOW COULD HE HAVE KNOWN?

🍀there has been a lot of times where I think of a rare concept or a rare word like “ my water bottle fell to the ground and it broke” completely in silence, and the passenger sitting beside me will talk out loud about how his water bottle also fell to the ground and also broke, in the exact same sequence of words I recite silently in my head.

🍀 my distant cousin has been a corn addict for quite long. Once he stopped for a few days at home and the girl of his dreams agreed to go out with him in school, Not knowing about his habits, he relapsed again and the same girl suddenly sneered and said she doesn’t want to go anymore. He stopped again for 3 days and the very same girl said, don’t listen to her clique of popular snobbish friends, she’s willling to go. How could she have known about the corn? Does the universe really make people kinder and circumstances better when you stay away from corn?

🍀 there are some songs which are played in public and I really don’t know that they have any demonic powers I just treat them as nice songs to listen on to go. Now this is where it gets downright creepy.

Whenever i listen to a particular set of songs, my luck feels like someone outside the matrix controlled it and it all goes downhill, not ordinary bad luck we encounter on a day to day basis but super weird things happen. Eg,appointments which are set in stone suddenly get cancelled for no reason, friend who has been chatting with me online suddenly goes very cold or monosyllabic as if I did something to upset her, clients come up with unusual reasons to not continue, every single time i miss the bus/train for one second, hawker centre owner gets my order wrong and gives me something I don’t like, parents who have been super cordial and supportive suddenly find fault with a small thing they don’t like

Then whenever I don listen to these songs but listen to something else entirely, the matrix is powered by something good as if a religious entity is rewarding me for “not listening” I feel like I’m inside a matrix where it’s not me, it’s SOMETHING ELSE ALTOGETHER controlling my fate. Like, random old friends pop out of nowhere to check in on me, friends start texting first, and with warmth, running into old classmates everywhere who want to take photo with me because they’re so happy to see me, client referrals start springing out of nowhere, complete strangers like hawker centre auntie smiling broadly at me as if I did something right. (I didn’t do anything before I met them, I just didn’t listen to these songs)

🍀 sometimes I sing and my song recordings on social media. I realised that EVERY TIME I talk to others about something completely common like a birthday party (not this, censored to protect my privacy) the number of negative comments from other people following me would increase. If I just go about my day as normal, then I would get positive comments instead.

🍀 as a rebellious teenager who tries to be a good model student, I am always obedient and guai in front of my parents who teach me to spend money only on the right stuff and not waste money on Starbucks, bubble tea, designer clothes and bags. Yes, they taught me well by telling me to save money and not waste. One day, during a lunch break, i told my friend out loud how i want to spend money on these things also and not save frugally. This was in Bugis.

That very same night as i went back to my far flung neighbourhood, my parents randomly out of the blue said how come nowadays young people don’t appreciate how much their parents care about them and sacrifice for them, how come people spend money on expensive restaurant meals instead of hawker food. This has never been discussed at home for the past 2 decades of my life when i did not tell others about this. Only that day.

And no, my parents don’t even have a smartphone. The only electronic device they use is the television and the microwave. HOW COULD THEY HAVE KNOWN UNLESS THEY PLANTED A MICROCHIP INSIDE MY BAG.?! And no, I from low income family. GOT SUCH BUDGET???

Looking for Advice Anyone doing research fellow job at NUS?

Research Fellow at NUS – salary, benefits & contract length?
Hi everyone! I’m curious about what it’s like working as a Research Fellow at NUS, particularly in health-related research areas (public health, clinical/health sciences, etc.).
Does anyone know the typical salary range for a Research Fellow? Are there additional benefits or allowances on top of the salary? Also, how long are Research Fellow contracts usually offered for—1 year, 2 years, or longer?
Would especially appreciate experiences from people working across different health research domains at NUS. Thanks!

Looking for Advice International Research as a Freshman

I’m joining Software Engineering at NUST SEECS next week. Is it realistic to get international research opportunities by reaching out to PhD students/professors abroad? What’s the best way to approach them? Also, any NUST SEECS-specific advice for getting into research would be appreciated. I’m aiming for MITACS eventually.

Discussion I hate the mobile key system

Post image
266 Upvotes

This is the worst thing in NUS, this single thing here is the bane of my existence. Solely because of this I am seriously deciding whether to stay another semester in school. Why does this exist, WHY are there no alternatives, YES i do have a shitty android, but it's NFC has NEVER failed me at a paywave transaction or tapping into public transportation for the past 3 years of me owning this phone, yet this obsolete machinery stands to guard my entrance EVERYWHERE. Can you imagine needing to go to the toilet IMMEDIATELY, and you need to pull out your phone, wait for the mobile key app to load THEN the door unlocks, this process is minimally 20-30 seconds assuming success in the FIRST TRY, a lot of things can happen in 30 seconds. I just spent 20 minutes trapped in my stair corridor, because i could not access this relic of technology. I did everything I could, restarting the app, changing phone placements, phone orientation, angle of placement, all xyz axis changed, restarting my phone, changing from data to school wifi vice-versa and even turning on and off my NFC. NOTHING worked, the system flashes green and stops. AND what makes this even worse is that when my neighbor finally came to my rescue (thankfully) and we tested the door again, it miraculously works again. This either has to be divine intervention or systemic oppression. WHY in the world were my past 20 minutes of effort in vain? I was absolutely torn apart by mosquitoes seeking refuge from the rain during this process. I despise this system and I pray for a day where NUS just offers a system where you can opt to just use a card instead like NUSC. Because, clearly they can. I hate the mobile key, I hate this door lock and I hate the fact that now I have to suffer the consequences of some perverts in PGP who no longer reside here anymore. Please revamp thanks 🙏 I can't be the only one who despises this door lock😭
