Je cherche à acheter un ThinkPad d'occasion que je peux utiliser pendant plusieurs années, principalement pour la programmation et le développement Linux.

L'un de mes principaux projets est de créer un jour ma propre distribution Linux légère, un peu inspirée par Linux Mint. L'objectif serait de faire quelque chose de simple, léger et adapté aux ordinateurs plus anciens.

Je veux aussi utiliser le portable pour :

Développement web (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.)

Création de sites web

Apprendre la programmation et éventuellement développer des applications

Utiliser VS Code ou des IDE similaires

Git et GitHub

Compiler des logiciels

Faire tourner Linux comme mon système d'exploitation principal

Tester ma distribution Linux dans des machines virtuelles

Naviguer sur le web et utiliser des outils AI tels que ChatGPT et Claude

Étudier, lire des PDF, regarder YouTube, etc.

Je ne prévois pas de faire du jeu vidéo, du rendu 3D, du montage vidéo professionnel ou d'autres travaux intensifs en GPU.

Ce que je recherche :

Bonne compatibilité Linux

Un CPU raisonnablement puissant pour compiler et développer

16 Go de RAM minimum, de préférence évolutif à 32 Go ou plus

Je n'ai pas besoin nécessairement du modèle le plus récent ou le plus puissant. Je préfère acheter un ThinkPad plus ancien avec de bonnes spécifications et évolutivité plutôt que de dépenser beaucoup d'argent pour un portable plus récent.

Quels modèles de ThinkPad me recommanderiez-vous pour ce type de charge de travail ?

Hi, I'm looking for a Linux lab computer or one for general everyday tasks, browsing the internet, watching movies, studying, etc. I was considering void Linux and gentoo, and then in the distant future LFS I don't want to pay a lot for the computer and I'm asking for help, is a processor with 2 cores and 4 threads enough or is it really better to pay the extra 50$ and buy a laptop with 4 cores and 8. And 8gb ram will be enough?

I’m looking for an upgrade for my new T480s’ speakers. I’ve been able to modify pretty much everything else in the machine, but the speakers are alluding. I love everything about the computer, but the stock speakers absolutely suck. Seems like lots of people have done retrofits but none of them have guides. I’ve been working with ChatGPT and it recommended the speakers from the X1 carbon GEN seven (model **5SB0V98078)**** **The only hiccup I’ve perceived is that the X1 speakers are for channels with a woofer and a tweeter but I’m using fedora and ChatGPT seems to think that there are already some Lennox drivers that could compensate for this. I’m willing to do some splicing to make it work. I’m fairly new to the Lenovo ThinkPad community so any advice is appreciated.

What's new in this release:

• Rebased on Linux 7.2.2-zen1 (first release on the 7.2 series)
• Several build script fixes based on community feedback from previous threads: BBRv3 now actually gets set as the default congestion control (the old way silently didn't survive olddefconfig), the build no longer touches your shared /etc/mkinitcpio.conf (each kernel gets its own config copy now), and the script refuses to build from an already-stripped config so rebuilds stay reproducible
• Added safety checks: missing /etc/kernel/cmdline now fails loudly instead of producing an unbootable UKI, and you get a warning if the microcode hook is missing

What stayed the same: two variants (universal for Zen1+ from T495 onwards, zen5 for Ryzen AI 300 with znver5, 1000Hz tick and BBRv3), UKI files for systemd-boot, vmlinuz for GRUB/rEFInd with initramfs generation instructions in the README.

Honest note after some fair criticism in previous threads: the march flags matter less than I originally claimed (kernel code barely uses SIMD), and zen 7.2 already ships sched_ext, O3 and THP=always out of the box, so the real value here is the trimmed config (smaller initramfs, faster boot, less attack surface) plus the per-variant tick/network tuning. If you want maximum performance with zero maintenance, ALHP repos are a solid alternative. This project is for people who want a kernel that only contains what their ThinkPad actually uses.

As always< feedback welcome, especially from owners of older models (T495, T14 G1/G2, L-series). If something breaks, open an issue.

I’m running into a wall trying to get true hibernation working on my new ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 because the BIOS only exposes s2idle (no hardware S3 sleep).

My machine is a hybrid setup with the NVIDIA RTX 1000 Ada Laptop GPU. I have a dedicated 35 GB raw swap partition on my NVMe drive perfectly mapped in GRUB and fstab to bypass file fragmentation issues.

When I trigger hibernation, the system successfully writes the RAM image to disk and powers down. On wake, the kernel successfully loads and decompresses the 4.7 GB image in about 2 seconds, but then immediately crashes and cold boots.

The kernel logs show the NVIDIA driver choking on the ACPI handoff:

nvidia 0000:01:00.0: PM: pci_pm_freeze(): nv_pmops_freeze [nvidia] returns -5.

I’ve baked options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1 NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/var/tmp directly into the initramfs to force the VRAM dump to the physical SSD instead of RAM, but the driver still panics on wake. I also tried disabling the GSP firmware (NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0), but the -5 error persists.

Has anyone with a P1 Gen 7 or similar Ada-generation ThinkPad managed to get hibernation working reliably? Are there any BIOS settings or specific kernel parameters I’m missing?

ive been looking into the x and t series for the most part bc from my research they have the best battery life tho i noticed that the intel variants have better battery life than the amd ones(on windows i assume)

is it worth getting the intel ones or its better to get amd just to be safe? i heard intel isnt as good on linux

im going to use it for some uni stuff like note taking and coding(thats where the battery life matters) and also some light gaming(im aware they arent gaming laptops) for when im away from home(the games are light like minecraft, stardew valley and old games like dragon age so im not worried about needing anything fancy for 1-2 weeks while im away) i also have a gaming pc with bazzite for demanding games so it wont be my primary gaming rig

im planning on installing either fedora or nobara on it

my budget is 1k-2k(preferably under 2k if possible) euros

ive been considering a LENOVO ThinkPad T16 Gen 5 or gen 6 with amd for the most part but the intel ones are cheaper

Which ThinkPad should I get for Linux Mint? E580 vs T440

I'm planning to buy a used ThinkPad and install Linux Mint on it. I have two options:

- ThinkPad E580 — i5-8250U

- ThinkPad T440 — i5-4300U

Which one would you choose for Linux Mint, and why? I'm mainly looking for good overall performance and a smooth Linux experience.

Is the E580 significantly better than the T440, or is the T440 still worth considering?

Hello everyone. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Gen 3 running Windows 11 Pro. I am thinking about switching it completely to Ubuntu or Ubuntu Studio. How has your experience been switching over? Do you have any useful advice before I commit? I do not want to dual boot this PC. Thanks in advance for any comments, ideas or suggestions.

I have a nice little e480 with 16g ram and dual boot to Win11 and Linux Mint. Everything works fine except for the two finger scrolling on the Win11 side. I know my hardware is fine because on the Linux side, scrolling works properly. I have tried the usual cures including downloading the synaptic driver and the overall update from the Lenovo website and it did not work. Scrolling is still elusive with two fingers. However, I can scroll using the left click and red button, or with double click with left click and the touchpad, so it is functional but annoying. I am tempted to just use this machine in Linux and pull the SSd out of it to use it elsewhere. I have read that this is a common problem, and I've tried most of the online suggestions. What is the root cause of this problem so I can fix it, or should I just leave this as a Linux machine? I have a lot of Thinkpads, so it isn't a tragedy if I confine this one to Linux, but I hate having an unsolved software problem. I mean, it' not like a blown motherboard, right? So, anybody out there have the real cure? Thanks

TL;DR:

Ugreen TBT5 Dock works perfectly on T490 (Fedora), Mac, and Windows 11, but on my X1 Yoga 4th Gen, the dock is detected and authorized, yet DisplayPort Alt Mode refuses to activate (active=no). External monitors are not recognized. Any ideas?

Hardware:
- Laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 4th Gen (20QGS2JP00)
- Dock: Ugreen TBT5 Docking Station 17-in-1 (UUID: 34158780-0066-6902-ffff-ffffffffffff, USB ID: 2b89:0716)
- Thunderbolt Controller: Intel JHL6540/JHL9480, Firmware 47.00

Issue:
Dock connects at USB4 40 Gb/s and shows as authorized in boltctl, but DisplayPort Alt Mode stays disabled. cat /sys/bus/typec/devices/port0-partner.0/active returns no, and hyprctl monitors only lists the internal display. Tested on both USB-C ports with the same result.

What I Tried:

1. BIOS Settings:
   - Kernel DMA Protection: Enabled, grayed out, cannot change
   - Thunderbolt BIOS Assist Mode: Disabled, grayed out (Message: "Unselectable for KERNEL DMA protection")
   - No way to modify Thunderbolt security settings.

2. Firmware Update:
   - Updated Thunderbolt controller from 45.00 → 47.00 via fwupd. No change.

3. OS Tests:
   - Arch Linux (Kernel 7.1.9): Dock detected, active=no
   - Fedora Live: Same behavior

4. Hardware Tests:
   - Dock works on T490 (Fedora), Mac, Windows 11 → Dock and cable are fine.
   - Both USB-C ports on X1 Yoga show the same issue.

5. Driver/Service Tests:
   - Restarted bolt service: No effect.
   - Reloaded typec and typec_displayport modules: No effect.
   - Reauthorized dock via boltctl: No effect.

Logs:
- boltctl list: Dock shows as authorized, connected, USB4, 40 Gb/s, policy: iommu
- /sys/bus/typec/devices/port0-partner.0/active: no
- /sys/bus/thunderbolt/devices/0-3/device: 0x716 (DisplayPort tunnel supported)

Conclusion:
Kernel DMA Protection is blocking DisplayPort Alt Mode activation. This setting is locked in BIOS and cannot be disabled. The firmware update did not resolve it.

Questions:
- Has anyone successfully used this dock with X1 Yoga 4th Gen?
- Any workarounds for Kernel DMA Protection on this model?
- Are there specific kernel parameters that might

I have really nice T14 but I have the issue that when I tap on the Touchpad for a single click, the "click" is not recognized. In Windows I do not have that problem at all, it works flawless.

I tried a few Linux Distro but had no luck so far.

Does anyone have the same issue, or have maybe anyone solved this problem?

Hello guys i have and r61 thinkpad from the 2000's and i wanted to upgrade the wifi card for a better one just for no reason and if i know it right it needs to be a pcie mini wifi card but i heard that there could be blacklist on devices like wifi cards on thinkpads and some might not work, do you guys have reccomendations for me ?

my budget is 30$
my current card can do about 100-130mbps and im hoping to get it upp to 300 or 400
