Vocabulary ื›ื‘ื™ื›ื•ืœ vs. ืœื›ืื•ืจื” โ€“ ืžื” ื”ื”ื‘ื“ืœ? / Whatโ€™s the real difference?

ื”ื™ื™ ืœื›ื•ืœื / Hey everyone!

Here is a breakdown to help you master the difference:

  1. ืœื›ืื•ืจื” (Lechora) โ€“ ื‘ืžื‘ื˜ ืจืืฉื•ืŸ, ืขืœ ืคื ื™ ื”ืฉื˜ื—

Meaning: At first glance, on the surface, ostensibly / seemingly.

Example:

"ืœื›ืื•ืจื”, ื”ืžืฆื‘ ื”ื›ืœื›ืœื™ ืžืฉืชืคืจ."

(Seemingly / on the surface, the economic situation is improving โ€“ but we haven't checked all the underlying parameters yet).

Meaning: Supposedly, "so-called", allegedly (with strong skepticism / denial).

Example:

ืขื•ืจืš ื”ื“ื™ืŸ ืืžืจ ื‘ื‘ื™ืช ื”ืžืฉืคื˜: "ื”ื•ื ื’ื ื‘ ื›ื‘ื™ื›ื•ืœ ืืช ื”ื›ืกืฃ."

(The lawyer means: "He supposedly stole the money โ€“ but I argue he did not do it at all.")

Quick Summary:

ืœื›ืื•ืจื” = ืจื•ืฉื ืจืืฉื•ื ื™ (Surface level / As it seems right now).

ื›ื‘ื™ื›ื•ืœ = ืกืคืง ืขืžื•ืง ืื• ืฉืœื™ืœื” (Skepticism / "Supposedly, but actually not").

ืžื›ื™ืจื™ื ืขื•ื“ ื“ื•ื’ืžืื•ืช ืžื‘ืœื‘ืœื•ืช ืœืฉืชื™ ื”ืžื™ืœื™ื ื”ืืœื”? ืกืคืจื• ื‘ืชื’ื•ื‘ื•ืช!

Help ืืš, ืื‘ืœ & ืืœื

For these three: ืืš, ืื‘ืœ & ืืœื, what is the difference? How do you use these differently and are there different connotations or situations where one sounds right and the other doesnโ€™t?

I always thought ืื‘ืœ was but and ืืœื was however, but Iโ€™m seeing all in Duolingo be translated as but?

Help Hebrew versus Yiddish

Hello!

Apologies if I have missed this discussion, the only threads I saw about it didn't quite seem to help.

So I have tried to look this up already, but I have a lot of trouble distinguishing reading Hebrew from Yiddish. The main thing that I have read explaining the differences that has seemed to click is that Yiddish vowels are spelled out, and that Hebrews are represented with niqqud (so essentially when written, generally not actually represented on the page unless you are looking at poetry or something that uses them a lot).

I am not sure how to distinguish aside from that, and even that mostly just feels like I guess. Since I can read Hebrew, I am confused while I am struggling so much, but I am, so, any help would be so appreciated! I feel really embarrassed by this question, so please be kind.

I know it may be a weird request but I want to learn this word for word. I don't need niqqud or transliteration (although they're welcome if someone feels like doing it)

Thanks in advance!

Vocabulary One Hebrew word from today's reading:ย ืžืฉื™ื— (mashiach).

Today,ย ืžืฉื™ื—ย usually meansย Messiah. In the text, Nathan of Gaza believed that Shabbetai Zvi was theย ืžืฉื™ื—ย and that the time of redemption had arrived.

But the word originally has a much more concrete meaning.

ืžืฉื™ื—ย comes from the rootย ืžึพืฉึพื—, connected withย anointing or spreading a substance over something.

In Biblical Hebrew, aย ืžืฉื™ื—ย was literallyย โ€œan anointed oneโ€ย โ€” someone, especially a king or priest, who had been ceremonially anointed with oil.

You can still see the same root in Modern Hebrew:

โ€ขย ืœืžืฉื•ื— (limshoach)ย โ€” to apply, smear or anoint
โ€ขย ืžืฉื—ื” (mishcha)ย โ€” ointment / cream
โ€ขย ืžืฉื™ื— (mashiach)ย โ€” the anointed one โ†’ Messiah

So hidden inside a word that later acquired enormous religious significance is a very physical action:ย putting oil on someone.

Itโ€™s a good reminder that abstract and theological words often begin with something very concrete.

Do you know another word whose modern meaning feels completely different from its original physical one?

Request Translation check

I'm currently putting together a teaching resource for primary school pupils about different scripts/orthographies around the world. The task has 18 translations of 'languages are amazing/incredible' in various languages which have differing scripts. I've checked the translations with multiple online translation tools, but I'm well aware that these do not always catch the nuanced points that native speakers can, hence why I wanted to post here for advice.

Would this be a suitable translation for Hebrew, or is there a better alternative?

Help Paleo-Hebrew Revival

Hi there, I had an idea related to Hebrew and I was wondering if it's something any one else is already thinking about.

I remember reading an article about the discovery of ancient Hebrew writing dateable to the time of King David's reign, and of course the artifact they found was written on using the paleo-Hebrew alphabet.

Ever since then I've started writing in my best interpretation of that script based upon what I found on Wikipedia. The most interesting thing I've found is that the letters mem and nun are basically a latin "m" or "n" with a tail that either curls beneath it or drops down. The motion of the hand used to write the mid-word ืž & ื  and end-word ืŸ is the same in Paleo-Hebrew just with differently-shaped lines; this is less obvious in the font you're reading these letters in but if you look at a proper calligraphy letter it's a bit more obvious.

Am I the only one who thinks the paleo-hebrew alphabet is cool? If not I would be eager to be connected with others sharing my fascination.

Vocabulary BHA (Bad Hebrew Advice): โ€œChildrenโ€™s books can help your Hebrew, especially at a beginner level.โ€

Post image
122 Upvotes

Honestly, it sounds pretty logical, right? An adult (for me, thatโ€™s anyone over 18) starts learning a new languageโ€”in our case, Hebrewโ€”and turns to original Hebrew children's books to improve their skills.

Hereโ€™s the catch: children's books are written primarily for native-speaking kids, not for adult second-language learners. You could debate that point, sure, but what you canโ€™t debate is the actual Hebrew level in these books. The language used is often surprisingly advanced, poetic, and literary. Thatโ€™s because the main goal is to expose kids who already speak everyday Hebrew to richer, higher-register vocabulary.

Hereโ€™s a great example: in the classic ื“ื™ืจื” ืœื”ืฉื›ื™ืจ (written by Leah Goldberg in 1972 and still an absolute staple), they don't ask:

The question is:

This is a very formal, high-register phrasing that nobody uses in daily conversation. Itโ€™s definitely not suitable for a beginner (Aleph / University Level 1) who is just building confidence with basic sentences, figuring out how to order coffee, or talking about what they like to do.

Honestly, itโ€™s not even a great fit for intermediate students (Bet / Level 2) or even advanced ones (Gimel / Level 3). Realistically, only students around Level Daletโ€”people ready to take academic courses or work professionally in Hebrewโ€”can comfortably tackle these texts.

A quick tip if you have kids: ask them to retell you the story in their own words instead. Itโ€™s actually a great, fun activity for Olim with kids!

Vocabulary Does Hebrew have a way to distinguish between studying and learning?

Consider the following sentence: I studied all night but when morning came I had not learned anything

In Hebrew I think you'd say:

ืœืžื“ืชื™ ื›ืœ ื”ืœื™ืœื” ืื‘ืœ ื›ืฉื”ื’ื™ืข ื”ื‘ื•ืงืจ ืœื ืœืžื“ืชื™ ื›ืœื•ื

In English we distinguish between studying, making an effort to acquire knowledge, vs. learning, actually acquiring the knowledge. So you can engage positively in studying but still fail to learn.

But Hebrew uses the same word for both the effort to acquire knowledge and the actual acquisition of the knowledge. It feels strange that in the same sentence I can engage positively and say ืœืžื“ืชื™ yet fail and describe that failure as ืœืžื“ืชื™.

In Hebrew is there a way to distinguish between studying vs. learning?

Help What type of Hebrew should I use for scientific names for a spec evo project Iโ€™m doing? Specifically for plants

Hi everyone! Kinda new, I wanted to know what type of Hebrew (or other Jewish language) I should use for the scientific names of my spec evo plant clade. You see, I want one of the first biologists exploring my projectโ€™s planet (Hephaestia, named such for its abnormal levels of iron) to be an ashkenazi Jew, or an Israeli national perhaps, sorta as a reference to my jewish ancestry. So I was thinking give the botanist this key feature, and having the majority of their discoveries being named in one of the languages that hold the most importance to their people, similar to how you usually find Latin all over Western Europe and its derivative cultures like Americans due to its significance to us

If you could give me a specific version that would hold a similar weight as Latin, maybe some basics on how it names things (any case affixes? Any perticular order for compound words? Etc.) , that would be great! Thank you in advance!
