EU Commission has ‘open questions’ for Spain on request for Frontex to expand in Ceuta
Hi everyone 👋 Lucia from EUobserver here again. Full disclosure as always: this comes from our own reporting, but there’s a broader EU question behind it that I thought would be interesting to discuss here.
Spain has asked for Frontex to significantly expand its presence in Ceuta, including making the agency’s deployment there permanent.
The European Commission, however, says there are still “important open questions” about what exactly Spain wants Frontex to do and how an expanded mission would work.
It raises a bigger question about the EU’s external borders.
Ceuta is Spanish territory, but it is also part of the EU’s external border with Morocco. When pressure at borders like this increases, how much responsibility should remain with the member state — and how much should be shared at EU level?
Should Frontex eventually have a permanent and stronger role at particularly sensitive external borders like Ceuta?
Or would that give an EU agency too much influence over an area that should ultimately remain under national control?
Curious where people here draw the line between European solidarity and national responsibility for border management. Let us know what's your opinion.
