Weekly Advice Thread General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of August 31, 2026

Need help choosing an EV, finding a home charger, or understanding whether you're eligible for a tax credit? Vehicle and product recommendation requests, buying experiences, and questions on credits/financing are all fair game here.

Is an EV right for me?

Generally speaking, electric vehicles imply a larger upfront cost than a traditional vehicle, but will pay off over time as your consumables cost (electricity instead of fuel) can be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the cost. Calculators are available to help you estimate cost — here are some we recommend:

Are you looking for advice on which EV to buy or lease?

Tell us a bit more about you and your situation, and make sure your comment includes the following information:

[1] Your general location

[2] Your budget in $, €, or £

[3] The type of vehicle you'd prefer

[4] Which cars have you been looking at already?

[5] Estimated timeframe of your purchase

[6] Your daily commute, or average weekly mileage

[7] Your living situation — are you in an apartment, townhouse, or single-family home?

[8] Do you plan on installing charging at your home?

[9] Other cargo/passenger needs — do you have children/pets?

If you are more than a year off from a purchase, please refrain from posting, as we currently cannot predict with accuracy what your best choices will be at that time.

Discussion Top towing capacity for EV in Sweden - No Tesla among the top 15 any longer.

Upvotes

I maintain a list of towing capacities (maximum — what you can tow with a BE licence) for electric cars in Sweden. It now covers 122 models and shows the highest available towing capacity per model. It’s based on every EV you can buy new or used in Sweden through official dealers — so no private/grey imports. Even though this list only reflects Swedish rules, it paints a very positive picture of how far electric cars have come as tow vehicles.

Tesla WAS the ruler in this segment once. But the Tesla Model X dropped out of the top 15 when the BMW iX5 arrived with an impressive 2,700 kg and up to 845 km WLTP — which should be good for at least 400 km even with a caravan on the hitch.

And the “3,500 kg club” has grown to six vehicles — the latest addition being the Iveco eDaily van, keeping company with pickups, a luxury SUV and a G-Class.

Ford F-150 Lightning – 3500 kg

Isuzu D-Max BEV – 3500 kg

Iveco eDaily – 3500 kg

Maxus eTerron 9 – 3500 kg

Mercedes G580 – 3500 kg

Porsche Cayenne Electric – 3500 kg

BMW iX5 – 2700 kg

BMW iX – 2500 kg

Hyundai Ioniq 9 – 2500 kg

Kia EV9 – 2500 kg

Porsche Macan Electric – 2500 kg

Audi Q6 e-tron – 2400 kg

Mercedes GLC 400 (electric) – 2400 kg

Volvo EX60 – 2400 kg

Ford E-Transit Custom – 2300 kg

Unfortunately I couldn’t fit WLTP range and battery size into the list, so it’s a bit misleading on that point.
Towing capacity = braked trailer, strongest variant. Always check the vehicle registration document — and remember that heavy loads require a BE licence.

As soon as I find out a way to publish the whole works I'll let you know. But for now enjoy! ;)

Tell me it’s a good idea or not? What are some pros and cons? Anything to look out for?

It’s a lower cost than a used model Y and lower insurance cost. Great range and great size.

Electrifying an Icon: Range Rover Finally Adds an EV to Its Roster

“On the road, the Range Rover Electric carries an EPA-estimated 333 miles of driving range with its 119-kWh battery pack charged to 100 percent. The battery is part of an 800-volt architecture that can be charged at up to 350 kW on a DC fast-charger. Land Rover says it can charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 22 minutes”

News Analysis: China’s CO2 emissions fall in Q2 2026 due to plummeting oil use

According to Carbon Brief, China’s overall CO2 emissions fell in Q2, and EVs were a major factor:

China’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions fell by 1% in the second quarter of 2026, as oil consumption plummeted amid the strait of Hormuz crisis.

The country’s use of oil fell by 9% overall and by 16% for transport, after the disruptions to supply from the Gulf through the strait.

China’s total CO2 emissions fell despite a continued rebound in coal-fired power generation.

This is the first time that reductions in oil consumption have been responsible for a fall in CO2 emissions overall – in all previous cases, coal consumption has been the main driver.

Other key findings for the second quarter of 2026 include:

Electric vehicles (EVs) and public transport have become key factors in China’s oil demand, enabling transportation levels to increase even as fuel use fell sharply.

The effect of EVs on oil consumption was almost twice as large as would be expected based on the increase in the number of EVs on the road alone, as the usage of existing EVs surged.

Oil consumption displaced by EVs in China in the first half of 2026 exceeded the UK’s total oil consumption over a six-month period.

These structural factors are not sufficient to account for the size of the fall in oil consumption, leaving behaviour changes as the other explanation.

Curtailment” of solar and wind output caused coal power to rise, despite strong hydro output, solar and wind capacity growth, as well as slower demand growth.

Major increases in coal-power capacity and a power market that continues to favour coal limited the amount of coal generation displaced by new wind and solar capacity.

Defying expectations of a boom, annual growth in coal use for chemicals production slowed down to 8%, from 15% in 2025 and 19% in the first quarter.

Discussion Why is there still so much forced EV hate in the US? It’s like moths to a flame on social media anytime an EV is mentioned! And it’s all misinformation!

It seems like it’s almost become worse! It’s the most frustrating experience ever when you’re educated enough to know that every single comment of misinformation and every ignorant statement being constantly spread like a game of telephone online is just straight up wrong. Like why the hatred? Why are we not past this yet?

News EVs grab record share of 24.9 pct of Australia's new car market in August, more than petrol and diesel

Highlights:

“The surge in interest in electric vehicles has continued for another month, reaching a record monthly total for EV sales and grabbing its best ever market share of 24.9 per cent of Australia’s new car market in August.

New data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries show a record 27,089 full battery electric vehicles were sold in the month, the highest ever. The 24.9 per cent market share beat the 23.5 per cent record set in June and is the third month in a row where EVs took a greater than 20 per cent share.

The data is doubly significant as EVs outsold petrol cars (25,824) and diesels (23,608), to become the best selling fuel type over the month.”

Discussion Do you seek out a specific charging station, or just use whatever's most conveniently located?

I used to just take whatever happened to be on my route, but now I find myself checking for Ionna and Rivian stations first to see what's close to me before taking the next best option. Anyone else?
