PSA PSA for travellers: Using the N2 safely

Hi travellers,

A quick, friendly reminder for visitors (and locals) who’ll be using the N2, especially when travelling to or from Cape Town International Airport. The N2 is one of the city’s main routes and is used safely by thousands of people every day. As with any major highway, it’s worth being aware of your surroundings and following a few precautions. The airport is located near areas that can be unsafe if you take the wrong turn, so these tips are simply here to help you navigate safely.

There is a rough route map (below) of areas to avoid (in orange) and the N2 that should be followed to safer areas.

General Tips:

  • Stick to the N2 until you’re close to the Cape Town city centre (or using the M5 to the northern suburbs), Somerset West or Stellenbosch.
  • Be cautious about taking “quicker” alternative routes.
  • Avoid stopping on the N2 unless your vehicle cannot continue.
  • Keep your doors locked and windows up.
  • Don’t leave bags, laptops, or valuables visible inside the car.
  • Familiarise yourself with the route before you set off.
  • Don’t stop for, or engage with, anyone attempting to wave you down.

Getting From the Airport:

  • The simplest and safest option is to take the N2 directly towards the city or Somerset West.
  • If you’re using a ride‑hailing service or shuttle, wait inside the official pick‑up area and confirm your driver before getting in.

There are plenty of locals who can share advice on routes if you'd like. Safe travels, and enjoy Cape Town.

Rough map. N2 highlighted in blue, areas to avoid highlighted in orange.

Question | Advice-Needed Help with spectacles!!

Hi people! I have a bit of a weird query - I’m in your beautiful city for conferences for another week and yesterday my specs literally flew off my face with the heavy wind 😅
Today i went to Clicks, Dis-chem, and Specsavers - however none of them have specs that I need instantly. I am myopic - can see near by things clearly but not far. My power is -2.0.
Do you know if there is any place if I may be able to get such specs in a day or two? Would very much appreciate any ideas!
Thanks in advance

Question | Advice-Needed Pubs/bars where the staff talk

Hi there, guys

Been feeling lonely and I've been spending the past year or so working on it but still lots of progress to make.

I would really dig if there was a bar to go to, one that's not really full, one where the bar tender stands and talks to you while drying a beer mug or something, like what happens in the movies.

It's probably a stupid request, but I really would dig a place where I can just spontaneously rock up, sit with a beer, and chat randomly to whoever's around.

There's a bar called Talking To Strangers in town but it looks packed and not easy to converse with a random person there, despite the name sake.

Not sure how stupid of a question/request this is, lol.

Also, extra points if it's in like Northern subs!

Transportation Query Quality and reliability of Cape Town to stellenbosch train

How is the train from Cape Town to stellenbosch?

Most information about reliability etc that I can find is from 2025 or earlier

I wish to know how reliable and safe it is in 2026 onwards

Reason for wondering is I plan on studying at stellenbosch university next year and just wondering about the practicality of taking the train to stellenbosch.

Taking the train seems alot easier than having to drive to stellenbosch etc etc, but I want to hear from people if it's practical and safe to use it

Looking For... Bra and Bra Measuring Recommendations for a Big Chest

Hi all!

I am really struggling to find my bra size and find bras that are comfortable. I am desperately looking for somewhere that can measure me and guide me, but I don’t really want to be spending 1k on a bra. I’m in the Atlantic seaboard area but travel around a lot.

Any recommendations are welcome.

PSA Safety , Violence and Injury Prevention

Not sure if anyone is interested in these topics but there is a free exhibition and global village currently on the go at the CTICC for free, incredible discussions between researchers, implementation people and they are looking for more community input to help inform upcoming suggestions to governments.

So if you are concerned about your own personal safety or your community go have a look

News Police Chase on N1 Ramp

I woke up this Friday morning as I do every morning, getting ready to go to work. I said goodbye to my loved ones, hopped into my car, and braced myself for the first challenge of the day; the morning commute.

I got myself in the line leading up to the robot just before turning off on Jakes Gerwel. In front of me were the traffic police. "Better be on my best behavior", I thought.

The light turns green and we drove onto Jakes Gerwel. In line at the next robot, I am still behind the traffic cops. A moment passes and I see a flash of blue in front of me as the cop car pulls off on the shoulder of the road and dissappears from my sight.

A moment later, the robot turns green and as I pass through the intersection, I see that those traffic cops have pulled over a taxi. Pretty normal stuff.

I continue my journey and find myself in the typical snails pace traffic as the N1 ramp is packed up by a long queue of motorists.

Crawl. Stop. Crawl. Stop. Crawl. Stop.

Mind-numbing.

But then, another flash of blue. As I looked up to Jakes Gerwel above, the traffic cops had sped to the scene, came to an abrupt stop, parked, and the officers jumped out of the vehicle.

"Odd." I thought.

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed two other officers running across the road. In my side mirror, I saw the one jogging gingerly as he made it onto the ramp.

"What the fuck is going on?" I thought again.

The jogging officer passes me almost in slow motion. My eyeline follows him, and that's when I spotted a man dressed in grey civilian clothing with a beanie on scurrying up the bushy hill next to the ramp. He makes it to the road, looks left, then right, then left again, and makes a break for it. The officer on foot halts and gives directions to his colleagues above. There's some confusion, but eventually they hop back into the car, presumably to make chase.

I woke up this Friday morning as I do every morning, not expecting to be a witness to a police chase. Mind you, it was not as dramatic and exciting as the American action movies. Not quite "Bad Boys".

Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?

Climb a hill and cross the road...

And the cherry on top? A final officer trailing behind, almost as if on a Sunday stroll as their colleagues scrambled to catch the perp.

General Discussion Rant: Meze brand

Post image
70 Upvotes

Howdefuck are these guys still in business? None of their cheeses remotely resemble what the name implies. And I've tried, out of desperation, quite a few (Ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan, halloumi, etc).

Every time I tell myself, "never again". So, some of the faults are mine. But, e.g., today the Spar's only option for boccocini was Meze. So I thought, they probably can't mess that up. Best Before is the end of September so it should be safe. But instead I got a bunch of goopy sour balls smelling like damp shoes. My dog won't even touch it. WTF. R80 down the drain and into the trash bin.

Meze, in my view, is basically a scam.

At least the weather was nice today.

Rant off.

So excited to be in Franschoek in the middle of October. I've been doing some research and have narrowed dinner spots to Le Petite Colombe, Epice and Hari Kitchen? Thoughts?

p.s. we are staying at Le Quartier Francais.
