Anyone else feel like Alexa is the only AI that gets moody?

Upvotes

I use several AIs and it's the only one that seems to perform better or worse depending on if I'm polite or not to it. It's trained me to be nice and it's been great for months. Makes me wonder if Bezos tried to upload his consciousness to it, lol.

Cannot enable drop in

When I try to enable drop in in my account, I see a loading icon and it doesn’t matter if I try with Android, iOS, reinstalling the app, re-pairing alexa, etc.

I send a screenshot (it is in Spanish though)

Any idea why? I’ve already tried on the same wifi, etc.

Alexa is giving generic weather not local

In the last couple of days Alexa is telling me the weather but not “The weather today in [place] …” just “the weather today …”

I asked it for the weather for my town and it did, and it was different.

My device locations are correct.

Anyone else?

Bedtime stories prompt my kids love

In case your kids love bedtime stories, here’s (roughly) the prompt we’ve been using for the past few weeks to get our kids to sleep.

Alexa, tell me a bedtime story that will make me cry, tell me about orphans and a mysterious benefactor and a heart-churning twist that makes me want to cry, then another twist that makes the story end up being heart warming.

Then we discuss the story and talk about the characters till they are sleepy. Seems like we finally found a nighttime routine that works.

Stop adding things to the Amazon cart?

My 86 year old MIL lives with us and has some dementia. She loves talking to Alexa, in fact, they can have a lengthy conversation over just about any topic (though my MIL will forget what Alexa told her a few minutes later). Anyway, as you know, Alexa likes to "offer" things to users to buy, and will even place an order if you're not careful (we found that out the hard way several months ago!). So I turned off voice purchasing so she can "accidentally" buy things that nobody here wants or needs. But the ability for her to agree to the offers still remains, and thus things start piling up in our cart. How do I shut off the "offers" feature? Or at least prevent her from putting things in our cart?

If you ask Alexa+ "What is 5% of 2 million?" What does she say?

For me, she will say "5% of 2 million is 5% of 2 million equals equals 100,000."

WTF?!

She answers this way most of the time. She has said "5% of 2 million equals equals 100,000." only 1 out of 10 times. Plus you can change the numbers, it doesnt matter.

Is there a way to set an alarm that I can only disable by tapping a button on my Echo?

I have an Echo Spot that I use as an alarm clock, set across my bedroom. It's way too easy to tell it "Alexa, stop." I want to make it so I have to physically get up to turn it off, is there any way to do that?

Alexa app won’t come up intermittently

For about 2 weeks now the Alexa app on my iPhone will stop responding. When I tap on it, it’ll show the splash screen for 15-20 seconds then go away. A few hours later it will start working normally. Then a few hours later, it starts acting up again. I’ve deleted/reinstalled the app, rebooted the phone, tried with WiFi-only, tried with cellular-only. Only the app is acting up - the echo devices are working fine all the time. Any ideas on what else to try?

Need help removing 'Discover Alexa+' and 'Popular recipes' from my new Alexa.

I’ve just purchased an Amazon Echo 5 Gen 3, on Alexa+ but it keeps giving me popular recipies and Discover Alexa+ notifications.

I want nether if these things and have expressly told the Alexa to stop showing recipes two times and directly turned them off in Home and Clock settings, but they keep coming up. Alexa has also said it's turned them off and is now actively gaslighting me by saying im likely mistaken (ironically whilst showing a popular recipe for smoked mackrel)

I'd also like it to stop giving me 'Discover Alexa+' updates and basically just display its home page and maybe the weather every once and a while.

If anyone can explain why my brand new Alexa won't stop showing my recipes even after I've turned these off in settings I'll be glad!

Lost several functions when cancelling Alexa+

Argh, I didn't want Alexa+, didn't ask for it yet it started my free trial. I just continued as normal until it asked to continue. I said no, cancel, and it went away. Fine. By the way, I added no product or skill while I had Alexa+

I went to change the temperature on my Ring thermostat and says "unable to load temperature sensors". It shows the settings but when I attempt to adjust the thermostat won't respond.

I noticed yesterday when I would tell Alexa to "mute amp" she didn't know what that meant. I had the Yamaha/MultiCast skill which is still there but disabled. When I try to turn on says "something went wrong".

This morning, while washing cloths, when the Samsung washer finished I didn't get "your washer is done" message from Alexa.

Echos all work, Ring cameras work. I guess I need to go around and check everything.

Life will go on, I'm sure, but feels like punishment from the Amazon gods. At the very least their incompetence.

Any suggestions? So let's start a couple hours of research...

Amazon Thermostat Stuck at 78 and Showing ESE OUT when lowering it

My Amazon thermostat has been stuck at 78 degrees with a green exclamation mark, when I tried to lower the temperature, it's showing "ESE OUT". Not sure what that means, my first thought would be the Dominion peak time incentive program controlling my thermostat. But I haven't got any email or get into the Dominion portal to check if there's a peak time event going on right now. The Alexa app doesnt show anything about peak time event and it doesn't show what the green exclamation mark mean either.

Anyone can chime in or experienced it in the past?

Echo devices won't connect is it possible to use them for anything else?

I have an echo spot 1 and an 8" gen 2 and as of yesterday they refuse to connect to Amazon and are now paperweights. They also think it's 15:30 all the time. Amazon has marked them as "unsupported".

Is it possible to use them for anything else? Bluetooth speakers?

Alexa bought concert tickets without my permission.

Alexa purchased tickets without my permission, I searched for ticket prices for a 311 concert and it asked me if I wanted to purchase them. I did and it came back with Luke Combs tickets purchased. I am not even a Luke Combs fan. I canceled it immediately, but it took a bit of arguing with Alexa. She was able to cancel it. Then, I tried to purchase the 311 tickets and it says it couldn't due to payment issues. Then later Alexa did purchase the tickets without my permission. Amazon said it couldn't refund the ticket that the Alexa bought on their device, with their software, on the amazon card. They said it was bought through a third party app for alexa and they have no control. Also, if you call Amazon customer service they will give you phone number for Alexa help that is disconnected. 877-375-9365 is the disconnected number. The chat customer service will make you upload the proof (below the ticketmaster/alexa + email proving it was purchased by alexa and the alexa chat roll up about the 311 tickets, it doesn't even know it bought the tickets). It will tell you they are looking for a resolution in the next 6 hours and will not provide you a solution. when you bring it up a second time 12 hours later. They will make you go through it again, just to see if you will give up in your claim. Wow. Also, it will purchase amazon music if you use the app without letting you know.

Wall switch for Alexa stand-alone?

Is there a wireless wall switch that will work with a stand-alone alexa echo 8 setup?

I'm well aware using a 3rd party integration brings along a lot of features. That's not what I'm asking about here. If I go that route I'd likely use a Lutron Pico and Caseta setup. Which would require it's own smart hub.

I'm asking if there's battery operated keypad that'll allow controlling lights via an Echo 8. This is for a dorm room and there's no other hub on which to run something else. There's a couple of zigbee sockets powering lights. It'd be nice to have a wall switch to control a lighting scene. Just paired with the Echo 8 directly.

Have an original echo Dot, used to be able to get Game notifications 15 minutes before game time, asked to

Include the Indiana fever games and somehow it switched to a third-party application instead of just Amazon giving me the AI, he used to always notify me 15 minutes before game times and it does not do that anymore. I have no idea what the hell happened and if that was the catalyst. It is far beyond the worst AI service that I use. I do have prime so I do have the upgraded version of Alexa and it is just called awful now.

Bulbs that respond instantly to voice, without a second app in the middle

Mine take a beat or two after I ask, and sometimes one out of three in the group just doesn’t move. I think part of it is that the brand app and the Alexa skill are talking through each other. What I want is something that pairs natively and responds the moment I finish the sentence. Has anyone found a brand where the voice side is actually reliable?

Solved Alexa plus and kids bedtime stories

I've been struggling with this for a few months now since Alexa Plus screwed our perfectly constructed children's bedtime routine. Asking Alexa to "tell a story to [child name]" would send it into a death spiral of Audible stories or subscriptions. Asking to "tell a personalized story" would send it into the old Alexa prompt for a topic but then would death spiral into "I can't do that right now" or "Please try again later" or "I can't find a book by that title".

Use "create a personalized story for [child name] about [theme]".

Still can't get Alexa plus to use it in a routine like we use to, Alexa asks child for a theme and my child would answer, but at least it works.

I do read to my children, but this is the lights off, close door routine. My child grew up on Alexa personalized stories, and we tried the Disney stories and other skills, but it wasn't the same, especially with different readers. My child also has randomly perfect memory of an Alexa story she wants to hear again from months or years ago, but is not published anywhere in a book or web. I'm really contemplating recording some of these stories right now while they still work.

TLDR: Working trigger for custom bedtime stories is "create a personalized story for [child name] about [theme]". Doesn't work in complicated routines as for now. Everything else causes Alexa to spasm or upsell audible.
